Stavanger

Yesterday, us three volunteers took the bus into Stavanger to see the sights, take in the culture, and experience Norway away from the farm. We had packed a lunch and our mission was to see Old Town (as the name implies, the old part of town). By bus it took us about 20 minutes to get into Stavanger from Randaberg. When we got off the bus we took off in the direction of where we thought Old Town was. We walked and walked and didn't seem to be finding anything besides the shopping district. We stopped at a museum, asked for directions, got a map and started walking again. We ended up walking in a big circle and passed by where we got off the bus an hour earlier and found Old Town almost a stones throw away in the opposite direction from where we initially took off. Actually, we weren't sure if it was even Old Town because there was no sign and the neighborhood looked very similar to the shopping district that we had been meandering through. We plopped down on a bench and ate our sandwiches, looked around and assessed that we were in fact in Old Town (see picture 2). Old Town is an attraction in Stavanger because it is a neighborhood of wooden houses dating back from the early 18th century. We finished our sandwiches, walked around a bit, and took the bus back home. It was satisfying getting out and seeing the sights of a foreign city. It was fun.
